I have many clients who have switched over to Google Apps primarily for their e-mail service. They are very satisfied and enjoys the services at FREE of cost. If you were using Gmail previously, it is nothing new. But you can get Gmail interface for your domain, i.e. you@yourdomain.com which uses Gmail interface.

It is very useful and faster service than other default mail services. You can archive your mails since it has got more than 7GB space. You can use your e-mail you@yourdomain.com to chat online with your e-mail users and even Gmail users. You can customise your webmail address like mail.yourdomain.com, webmail.yourdomain.com, etc.  You have free mailing list management like Google Groups.

Other than e-mail service, you can use Google Docs for your domain to manage, store and share your documents online with your friends and groups. You also get Google Calendar for your domain to manage and share your events and schedules online. You can have a simple website with Google Sites to a interactive forms online at your domain from these service.

To use this service, you need to configure your MX records and CNAME records. Although you can normally change MX records, you may need your service provider’s help to create new CNAME records for your domain.

The problem started after ugradation of cPanel and WHM to the latest version (11.25) by my root service provider. I submitted trouble ticket mentioning the problem but they couldn’t trace what caused that problem.

After many research, I doubted the e-mail routing problem since the web forms were successfully submitted and stored in the core database.

SOLUTION

It was mainly caused by settings of e-mail routing in your MX records. I you are using latest cPanel version, there are some bugs where you cannot change your MX records and update the options of e-mail routing. You need to contact your web host to configure it for you. But if you have access to the Web Host Manager (WHM) as a reseller, you can easily choose and save the email routing options in DNS Functions >> Edit DNS Zone.

When you are in “Edit DNS Zone” of your account, you will have to scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see a new feature of WHM/cPanel to choose the e-mail routing options. By default, the system chooses the first option “Automatically Detect Configuration…” which may work if your domain is not configured to use the Google Apps services for your e-mails. This option fails if you have configured your domain to use the Google Apps services for your e-mails. The server, with this options chosen, understands that the mails for your domain is being managed by your default web server where your domain is hosted with. It doesn’t understand that there is other third party server managing all mails for your domain. Hence, it doesn’t deliver your web form submissions to your inbox in Google Apps mail account.

The right option for you to choose is the last option, “Remote Mail Exchanger” and save the option. It may take some time for DNS to propagate completely for it to work. After successful propagation, your web form works flawlessly like before. With this configuration, your main web server understands that there is another third party web server managing all the mails fro your domain. It will not act as a mail exchanger for the domain and allow configured third-party mail exchanger to manage all the mails.

Hope this will help you to resolve if you have experience the same problem after your cPanel upgradation.

How do I clean my website and request the Google team to review the website? This was the question when I faced such trouble with one of my clients’ website. But I found a very easy process to clean and reinstate your website in Google.

Please follow the following steps to request the Google team to reconsider and review your website:

1. The first thing you will have to do is own a Google account to access Google webmaster tools.

2. Add your currently affected website into the list of your websites.

3. When you are finished adding your affected websites with a verification code, you will see a warning message saying that your website may be distributing malware. Click on “More information….” link.

4. Before proceeding with a request to review your website, you will have to backup your current full database and uploaded contents like images and external pages.

5. When you are completed with backup and downloading of your backed-up web contents and database, clear or delete your existing your website directories, files,etc.

6. After deleting or clearing your webspace affected with malware or virus, proceed to request the Google team to review your website. This may take at least 24 hours to complete.

7. Check your Google webmaster tools to see if there is still a warning message about your website. If it is clear, you are ready to go with a fresh installation of your favourite CMS or a newly created web files with contents. Your website is now clean and the Google warning disappears.

What are the causes of Google blocking the website?

When you create or upload web files, there might be some security features compromised which give the hackers to attack your website. It very necessary to update your credentials like administration or FTP user name and password periodically. Do not create any insecure web forms whereby you allow visitors to upload files which may infect your existing webfiles.

It is very essential to secure your databases and other web files. Many web hosts do not allow its clients to set the directory or file permission beyond 755 to prevent any such attacks.

Be aware of your usernames, passwords, permission to files and directories and server security features to ensure that your website is always secure.

If you want to browse websites hosted in Bhutan, you will have to type the full web address with prefix”www”. If you forget to type the prefix, you will never be able to load Bhutanese websites. It is some times very frustrating for users to see “website not found” message although the website address is correct (but typed without “www”).

Some webmasters  realised this problem and created a custom redirection program either through PHP code or through .htaccess to swiftly redirect users to a proper website address if users type web address without “www” prefix.

I am hosteing several websites in overseas servers and there is no problem loading website even if it is typed without “www” prefix. It is, I feel, mainly due to CNAME configuration of the websites which needs to be provided by the web hosts. Whenever I ask the technical people of some popular web hosts, they say they are not sure why the websites do not load without “www”.

Since the number of websites hosted in Bhutan increases with many government agencies, corporations, private businesses and personal web, it is very essential for any ISP or web host in Bhutan to reflect upon its advance technologies to simplify procedures or process to load their clients’ websites.

My last word would be, if you ever try to visit a website hosted in Bhutan, do not forget to type “http://www.websiteaddress.(com.bt, bt, .net.bt, …).

For Windows OS (Operating System) users, Microsoft Internet Explorer comes pre-installed which becomes default browsers for many. For MAC users, Safari becomes their default browser.

But default browsers are not always best to use. They are not user friendly and compatible either. Therefore, you need to explore some third party internet browsers which most of them are free of cost.

For me, I never stay and get attached to one browser. It is good to browse and look for any new browsers and fast browser. What are my best internet browsers?

Mozilla Firefox comes in my first option. It is followed by Google’s browser Chrome and Opera.

You may ask why. I can state some prominent reasons for opting those browsers. Firstly, they are much faster than Internet Explorer. These browsers are user friendly with many addons and extensions. You will see that many websites built on latest framework and technology are compatible with those browsers. But  in older browser and OS’s default browsers, it is never a good experience to explore some latest websites.

Therefore, it is always good to look for new software to browse your website. We all like faster and easier software than slow and complicated interface. I recommend you to be up to date with fast evolving technology in this ICT era!
